NZIPP National Awards & Conference

August 24th, 2009

I have just returned from Wellington, for the annual NZIPP conference and Epson Iris Awards. What a great time we all had. To be surrounded by such inspirational photographers, all with a shared passion, is just what you need once a year.

I had the pleasure to be asked to judge for the first time. I enjoyed this far more than I expected. Certainly the pressure to ‘perform’ is an onerous one. As a shared panel, we viewed about 250 images each day in various categories. While there was a lot of variety, the process does reinforce in my mind the wealth of creative talent we have in such a small country. A cliche maybe, but for a pool of 4million people, we do punch above our weight. At times perhaps, judging is a little too tough. But this alone makes the honour of any print award more valuable. Thank you to the Honours Board for having me as part of this process.

Top effort to all organisers, speakers, attendees & award entrants. The power of membership is the collective support we can offer each other, and push our craft forward (OK – and have a few drinks!!).

Had to Laugh

August 20th, 2009

Nothing photographic, but found this one of life’s little gems.

Was talking about school with my boy who has not long started. He was telling me all about what they do, taking great pleasure explaining the games they play at lunchtime. Excited that he was such a fast runner, we said no wonder, and described that he doesn’t have a lot of mass to slow him down.

To which he replied, “I know, I can go really fast without all those numbers in my head!!”.

5DII Video

August 20th, 2009

I had a play recently with the new HD video function of my 5DII. Actually it has taken me some months to take the time to ‘play’. Holiday time at Rotorua was perfect. We were on the Skyline Luge as you will see.

I am no Peter Jackson, and suspect the rendering / upload specs are not quite doing this justice. But I was impressed with the changing light conditions, captured at speed, with a wide angle lens.

But even more so, that that it was actually my 5year old boy who5DII took this footage!
